Random Pairing Generator
Make pairs from a roster instead of merely shuffling its order. Each person appears in one pair per round; an odd roster leaves one participant without a partner.
Results
Choose your settings and generate a list.
How to use this generator
Paste one participant per line and press Make pairs. Keep the seed blank for a fresh cryptographic shuffle, or enter a short seed to reproduce the same pairs from the same roster. Choose whether an odd participant stays solo or joins a final group of three.
Ways to use it
- Make conversation partners for a workshop with an explicit odd-person rule.
- Create repeatable practice pairs that a facilitator can check later using the same roster and seed.
What the collection contains
Only the roster you paste is used. It is shuffled locally and never transmitted to Random List Lab.
Limits to keep in mind
Pairing is random, not balanced by skill, accessibility, friendship or prior pair history. A reproducible seed is for repeatability, not secrecy. The roster must have at least two different entries.
Browser-only pairing reviewed 2026-11-02; test odd/even rosters and seeded repeats after algorithm changes.
How an odd roster works
Each participant appears once in a round.
For Alex, Bailey, Casey, Drew, and Emerson, Solo mode gives two pairs and one solo participant. Group-of-three mode gives one pair and one group of three. The exact assignment changes unless you use the same seed and roster.
